In the B-Shops Program, First Chance for Children partners with several minority barber shops and beauty shops. We provide each shop with a basket of books suitable for children from birth to third grade. The baskets contain a mixture of classic children’s books and books likely to resonate with minority children. Our goal is to elevate the place that reading occupies in the community and to make the customers aware of our other parent and caregiver services, including our Home Visits and Lend & Learn Toy Libraries. Each of those also has a strong early language and literacy component.
The B-Shops program is modeled after a national initiative launched in 2004 that has two parts: Boys Booked on Barbershops (B-BOB) and Girls Booked on Beauty shops (G-BOB). In recent years, that initiative has teamed with the National Institute of Literacy to take advantage of naturally occurring opportunities in the community to foster a love of reading.
